It was only a couple of weeks ago I was reminiscing about whether I was doing the right thing staying the winter hear in Idaho. That is no longer even a consideration. The cold weather has slipped far behind as a consideration.
Last week I found out my sister Linda's husband of 35 plus years has cancer. Now all other whining I have done regarding the weather has become OBE, as we used to say when I was in the Navy. OBE means "Overcome By Events" which is exactly the case here.
It appears he has had it for quite some time but was not aware of it. Last Wednesday, while at work, he started having stroke like symptoms. For example his muscle control on the left side of his face diminished and his face was sagging. They took him to the hospital in fear of a stroke but after taking a CT scan they found out he had a tumor inside his skull. The CT scan further revealed that he had a tumor in his lung and yet another in his kidney. Further testing revealed them to be cancerous. Obviously this is a very serious matter and too hard to deal with all at once. So on Thursday he underwent four plus hours of surgery to remove the tumor from inside his skull with the idea that it was the most immediate problem with the tumor pressing against his brain and causing what amounts to a stroke.
Today he was scheduled to visit with the oncologist to work out a plan for dealing with the 3 cancer areas. I just spoke to my sister and she told me that Mike's Doctor was Dr. Dorn from the Mountain States Tumor Institute. I have known Dr. Dorn for more than 15 years. He was my mothers Doctor and I used to take her for radiation treatments and checkups with Dr. Dorn. I feel a little better knowing Mike is working with a great Doctor.
Anyway, Linda told me that the next thing to happen is Mike will have surgery to remove the tumor from his kidney. This will happen as soon as they can get him scheduled. Then starting 7 January 2008 he will begin both chemo and radiation treatments for all three cancer sites.
Like I started to say at the beginning of this posting I am glad that I am staying the winter because I will be able to help Mike and Linda with whatever they need.
Besides helping out with the family I still get to visit with my granddaughter Ellery. In fact as I write this I am baby sitting with her while her parents are out having a date night. She is busy watching Walt Disney's Peter Pan cartoon movie. Boy it sure is nice being handy for baby sitting duties.
I may or may not be making another posting here before the new year, so if not, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
