Destination :      Calico Ghost Town

Web Address :      Yes : Click Here to Visit

Category :      History / Ghost Town

Location :      City : Yermo     State : California

When :      Any Year: Spring, Fall or Winter

Reason to Visit :      You can visit this famous ghost town, where silver reigned king and The U.S. Borax Co. brought its 20-mule team to town on a regular basis.

One third of the town is original; the remaining carefully reconstructed to recreate the "spirit' of Calico's Old West past. Walking tours with Calico's historian examine the life of miners, the famous 20-mule team, and a U.S. Postal mail dog, named Dorsey.

A narrow gauge railroad operates within town limits and a hardrock silver mine offers up underground exploration.

Location and Directions:
From I15 West heading toward Las Vegas from Barstow take the Ghost Town Road exit (plenty of signs) turn left onto Ghost Town Road and head north for about 3 miles. You can't miss the tall miner sign at the entrance.

Ray Plumlee's Comments :
I stayed in the Calico Ghost Town RV Park and Campground. I took a leasurely walk up the hill (about 900 feet) to Calico Ghost Town. Had a geat time looking around. It was an absolutely beautiful day with a gentle and cool breeze. One of the nicest days I've seen in a long time.

This was an interesting visit for me because I had been here several times before in the late 1950's and early 1960's. I must admit it didn't look at all like I remembered. But it was still an enjoyable visit. The town is well maintained and clean. In fact they have paved the streets which were all dirt when I was here before.

There are plenty of shops to visit but the commercialism is done more subtly than other ghost towns I have been to.

Below are some pictures I took around town. Below those are some of the Calico Ghost Town RV Park and Campground.

And I have been to Calico Ghost Town before in the late 1950's early 1960's.

Traveling Webmasters Comments about his previous visit in the late 1950's early 1960's. :
My family went to Calico several times during the mid to late 50's.

I have a home movie (now on DVD) of a trip to Calico with Mom, Dad, my brother Jerry and sister Linda. Also in these films were my Grandfather Ernest Seay and Grandmother Beatrice (McCarthy) Seay.

I remember one time attending a UFO convention. I don't remember the exact year but it was probably 59' or 60'. I think I remember one of the speakers at the convention was Major Donald E. Keyhoe.
