Destination :      Crater Lake

Web Address :      Yes : Click Here to Visit

Category :      Scenic / Scenic View

Location :      City : Crater Lake National Park     State : Oregon

When :      Any Year: Spring, Fall or Summer

Reason to Visit :      About 6,850 years ago Mount Mazama, a stratovolcano, collapsed to produce Crater Lake. Crater Lake is about 6 miles wide. The catastrophic pyroclastic eruption released about 12 cubic miles of magma to the surface. It was one of the largest eruptions in the last 10,000 years.

Today Crater Lake is widely known for its intense blue color and spectacular views. During the summer, visitors may drive around the rim of the crater on Rim Drive, enjoy boat tours on the lake surface, stay in the historic Crater Lake Lodge, camp at Mazama Village, or hike some of the park's various trails including Mt. Scott at 8,929 ft.

The lake and its surrounding region became Crater Lake National Park in 1902, with an area of 286 square miles. Crater Lake's elevation is 8,106 feet.

The winter brings some of the heaviest snowfall in the country, averaging 533 inches per year. Although park facilities mostly close for this snowy season, visitors may view the lake during fair weather, enjoy cross-country skiing, and participate in weekend snowshoe hikes.

Crater Lake is located in southwestern Oregon, about 50 miles northeast of Medford.

Ray Plumlee's Comments :
It was very much what I remembered of it from my last visit in 1964. What a beautiful drive it was to Crater Lake and a what a magnificant site to see once I got to there.

I highly recommend the drive and visit to Crater Lake. It is such a maginficant view that I give it my highest (5 star) rating.

Below are some pictures I took of Crater Lake.

Traveling Webmasters Comments about his previous visit in 1964. :
As a teenager my family moved from southern California to Imbler (near La Grande), Oregon. On the way there we stopped by Crater Lake. It's magnificance has remained with me all these years.
