Reason to Visit : Gene Autry, known as 'America's Favorite Singing Cowboy,'was a phenominal Hollywood success story.
Born in Tioga, Texas, on September 29, 1907, Orvon Gene Autry bought his first guitar at the age of 12 for $8. When in the late 1920s he was discovered by accident, while working in a Kansas telegraph office, when none other than Will Rogers overheard him singing, and suggested that Gene try his luck on Radio. From 1937 to 1942, Gene Autry placed first among Western movie stars, making hundreds of B-Movie western classics.
His footprints and six-guns are immortalized in the cement at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where he was awarded more "stars" on the Hollywood Walk of Fame than any other performer.
He was also known as a songwriter, and his recording of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is an all-time Christmas classic. He wrote "Here Comes Santa Claus" after riding in the annual Santa Claus Lane Parade (now called The Hollywood Christmas Parade).
In his life after acting he was one of the richest men in California, where he formed Golden West Broadcasting, and owned the KTLA-TV studios (Channel 5) and KMPC radio for many years. He also owned the California Angels baseball team. He had and estimated worth of over $100 million at his death in 1998.
But the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum isn't just about Gene Autry. Far
