Destination :      Hoover Dam

Web Address :      Yes : Click Here to Visit

Category :      Scenic / Scenic View

Location :      City : Las Vegas     State : Nevada

When :      Any Year: Spring, Fall or Winter

Reason to Visit :      Hoover Dam, located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. A wildly popular destination for Las Vegas locals and visitors. The dam is one of the most impressive engineering feats in the world.

Hoover Dam is 727 feet high, 1,244 feet long, 660 feet thick at the base, and 45 feet thick at the crest. It weighs 6.6 million tons and contains 3.2 million cubic yards of concrete. Two spillways, one on each side of the canyon, protect the dam and powerhouse from overflow and are each large enough to float the greatest battleship.

Hoover Dam is also sometimes called Boulder Dam. The originally slated site for the dam project was 10 miles upstream, at Boulder Canyon. The dam site eventually ended up in its current location, Black Canyon, and the dam was named after President Herbert Hoover in 1930.

Ray Plumlee's Comments :
Though the Hoover Dam is huge and an obvious engineering wonder, it was not as wide as I thought it would be.

Though it is not as wide as I had imagined It is in no way a disapointment because it is such a magnificant sight.

Just a few short miles out of Las Vegas the Hoover Dam is a must see. It is one of world's greatest man made wonders.
