Destination :      Roswell UFO

Web Address :      Yes : Click Here to Visit

Category :      Entertainment / Strange and Weird

Location :      City : Roswell     State : New Mexico

When :      Any Time

Reason to Visit :      The Roswell Incident, is one of the most debated incidents in history. Sometime during the first week of July 1947, something crashed on a ranch 30 miles north of Roswell. The Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) issued a statement claiming to have recovered a crashed "flying disk." An article ran on the front page of the Roswell Daily Record and the next day, RAAF changed its statement to say that the object was a weather balloon, not a flying disk as they previously reported. This revised statement sparked immediate controversy and has continued to be a topic of debate 60 years later.

Now Roswell hosts an alien theme with alien eyes on the lampposts, space ship logos for a local car dealer, city of Roswell logo and branding campaign including a space ship. There have been numerous Television documentaries a Television series even a movie.

Directions:
Roswell is located 70 miles East of Ruidoso, NM on U.S. Highway 70, and is located less than 200 miles from Albuquerque, NM; Lubbock, TX; Amarillo, TX; and, El Paso, TX. where U.S. Highways 70 and 285 intersect in Southeast New Mexico.

Ray Plumlee's Comments :
Since I was a little boy I have been fascinated with UFO's. It started when my mother, Vera Mae Plumlee, became interested in UFO's in the mid 1950's and we started attending UFO conventions. The first was the one at the Giant Rock airport which was home of the first Flying Saucer Convention hosted by George Van Tassel. We attended the Giant Rock airport convention several years in a row. We turned it into a family vacation by bringing our camping trailer. For mom and dad, Thurman Plumlee (perhaps a little reluctantly) it was a serious of lectures and other presentations. For my brother Jerry and my sister Linda it was excitement and fun. There was a lot of other kids there so we had a lot of fun.

Anyway, now you know why I wanted to stop by the Roswell UFO Museum and UFO Research Center. The Museum seems to be fairly popular. I was there during the off season and near to closing time and there were a number of people there. I saw what appeared to be a group from Japan. Of course I come across groups from Japan most everywhere I go.

The museum is located inside what used to be a movie theater. Since the Roswell UFO Museum and UFO Research Center has become so popular they are going to break ground on a new and larger building this summer (2007).

If you like standing in front of a lot of displays reading old newspaper accounts of the Alien UFO cover up of 1947 then this is the museum to visit.

I have rated this muse as a 3 star destination. Which is pretty good for museums. My higher recommendations are reserved for natural destinations such as the nearby Carlsbad Caverns.

Traveling Webmasters Comments :      Growing up in the 1950's my parents (actually Mom) became a big UFO enthusiasts. We used to attend UFO conventions held at the Giant Rock Airport and at the Calico Ghost Town in California. So some of Mom's interest rubbed off on me. She had me read Major Donald E. Keyhoe's book "The Flying Saucers Are Real." I have been an avid Science Fiction fan ever since. Of course Robert Heinlein and Andrea Norton helped fan that interest.

Now to be honest I probably would not go this far out of my way to visit Roswell but, The Carlsbad Caverns are not far away and the two together make the trip worth trying. So here is my chance to be in the city where the best known UFO crash and cover-up occurred.
